Why I Choose Oil-Based Perfume Extracts

Oil-based perfume extracts.

Out of curiosity, I ordered a few.

That discovery completely changed my relationship with perfume.

Not only had the issues I experienced with alcohol-based fragrances almost disappeared... I had discovered an entirely different way of wearing fragrance.

Closer to the skin.

Slower.

More intimate.

From that moment on, I hadn't just found a different carrier.

I had discovered a different philosophy.

When most people think of perfume, they picture a bottle filled with alcohol.

Oil is often seen as an alternative.

Yet...

For thousands of years, it was exactly the opposite.

Long before modern alcohol-based perfumes existed, the great civilizations of Egypt, Persia, India, and the Middle East were already crafting fragrances from botanical oils, balsams, resins, and scented ointments. Traditional Attars remain one of the finest surviving examples of this ancient art.

Alcohol didn't invent perfume.

It simply introduced another way of wearing it.

And it was this encounter with Attars that eventually led me, years later, to create Atypique Parfum.

If Atypique Parfum is devoted entirely to oil-based Perfume Extracts today, it isn't because I believe they are superior.

It's because they express, with remarkable accuracy, the relationship I want to create between a fragrance... and the person wearing it.

A Simple Explanation

People often ask me:

"Are oil-based perfumes better?"

My answer is always the same… No.

They simply tell a different story.

Comparing an alcohol-based fragrance to an oil-based Perfume Extract is a bit like comparing a piano to a cello.

Both can move us.

Both can be extraordinary.

But they don't speak with the same voice.

The question isn't which one is better.

The real question is what each one is trying to offer.

Alcohol diffuses.

Oil reveals.

That single idea captures almost my entire philosophy.

Alcohol carries the fragrance into the air.

Oil brings it closer to the skin.

One favours distance.

The other favours connection.

One creates a presence that projects.

The other creates a presence that gradually reveals itself.

Neither is right... Neither is wrong.

They simply express two different visions of what perfume can be.

I Don't Want My Fragrance to Fill a Room

For decades, perfumery has focused on one question:

"How can a fragrance travel through the air?"

I prefer to ask a different one.

"How can a fragrance travel across the skin?"

Those two questions may sound almost identical.... They are anything but.

The first is about projection.

The second is about connection.

I don't want my fragrance to enter a room before I do.

I'd rather it reveal itself when someone steps a little closer.

To be discovered… Not announced.

That isn't a lack of character... It's a deliberate choice.

A Fragrance That Moves at the Rhythm of the Body

Oil doesn't simply slow evaporation.

It allows the fragrance to move at the natural rhythm of the body.

The warmth of the skin.

Movement.

Human connection.

The aromatic materials unfold gradually.

The transitions become softer.

The fragrance takes its time.

It doesn't try to tell its entire story in the first few minutes.

And I believe that's something we all need from time to time.

In a world where everything moves faster and faster… I like the idea of a fragrance inviting us to slow down as well.

Soul Notes Speak Sooner

People often assume that an oil-based fragrance simply lasts longer.

The reality is far more nuanced...

In an alcohol-based perfume, rapid evaporation naturally places the Top Notes in the spotlight.

Then come the Heart Notes.

Finally, the Soul Notes.

With an oil base, those boundaries become softer.

The Top Notes remain present longer.

The Soul Notes emerge much earlier.

Instead of unfolding in distinct stages, the fragrance breathes as one continuous movement.

Like a melody whose instruments converse with one another rather than waiting for their turn.

The Skin Becomes the Perfumer's Final Partner

With an alcohol-based perfume, much of the fragrance's behaviour is driven by the evaporation of alcohol.

With an oil-based Perfume Extract, the skin plays a far more active role in its evolution.

Its temperature.

Its hydration.

Its hydrolipidic barrier.

Its natural chemistry.

All of these influence how the aromatic materials gradually reveal themselves.

The fragrance is no longer just a formula... It becomes a dialogue.

I like to think that one of my creations is never truly finished when it leaves my workshop.

It reaches completion the moment it meets someone's skin.

A More Subtle Presence... Yet Deeply Alive

You will sometimes hear people say:

"Oil-based perfumes aren't as strong."

I wouldn't put it that way.

They don't speak as far.

But they often speak more deeply.

Their sillage is usually more intimate.

Yet their presence remains remarkably consistent.

It appears.

Then fades.

Then returns with the slightest movement.

That quiet rhythm is part of their beauty.

A Different Way of Thinking About Longevity

People often ask me:

"How long does it last?"

I prefer to ask a different question.

"How long does it continue to unfold?"

Because a fragrance may remain detectable for fifteen hours… while stopping its evolution after only two.

An oil-based Perfume Extract, on the other hand, may continue revealing new facets for hours, even if its sillage remains discreet.

To me, the richness of the journey matters far more than its duration.

Two Philosophies... One Shared Love of Fragrance

Oil-based Perfume Extracts are not meant to replace alcohol-based perfumes... They simply serve a different intention.

If you love fragrances that are airy, sparkling, and designed to quickly fill a space, alcohol is an extraordinary medium.

If you're looking for something more intimate...

A slower evolution...

A deeper connection between the fragrance and your skin...

Then oil offers another path.

It's not a hierarchy... It's simply two different ways of experiencing the same passion.

I'm not trying to create a fragrance that gets noticed.

I'm trying to create one that gets discovered.

I'm not trying to fill a room.

I'm trying to accompany a presence.

I'm not chasing performance.

I'm pursuing emotion.

Over the years, I've come to believe that there are perhaps two ways of experiencing a fragrance.

The first is to wear a fragrance.

The second is to inhabit one.

You wear a fragrance when it complements your image.

You inhabit a fragrance when it evolves with your skin.

When it breathes with your rhythm.

When it reveals something about you instead of simply adorning you.

That vision guides every creation I make.

Because, in the end... I don't create fragrances so people will smell more.

I create them so people can inhabit their own presence with a little more awareness.

A fragrance may never change a life… But it can transform a moment.

And sometimes… One moment is all it takes.

Even though I have always been fascinated by scents and fragrances, alcohol-based perfumes never truly agreed with my skin.

Some would leave it irritated.

Others would smell completely different once I wore them.

For a long time, I simply assumed perfume wasn't meant for me.

Then one day, while trying to understand why, I discovered there was another way to experience fragrance.

A tradition that goes back centuries… Attars.
