Why Does a Perfume Move Us ?

Serge Dumont

The Crowd and the Return to Self

There are days when the crowd swallows me painfully.

The loud voices moving around.

The anxious glances crossing.

The energies, of all kinds, tangling together.

In those moments, I wear a perfume I created for myself alone.

A perfume of anchoring.

A perfume of return.

A perfume that brings me back to my own energy.

With every breath, something realigns within me.

Something soothes me and reminds me who I am.

And one question rises:

Why can a perfume move us with such precision ?

An Intimate Olfactory Map

Emotion arises when a scent touches an inner memory older than words.

Each of us carries a deeply intimate olfactory map within.

Refuge scents.

Landscape scents.

Memory scents.

Scents that correspond to a profound inner state.

Some notes become points of support.

They hold us.

They steady us.

They awaken a distant yet intact sensation within us.

For me, two beautiful notes open that door… Cedar and the scent of Mushroom.

Cedar: Verticality and Stability

Cedar draws a straight line inside me.

It reminds me of the hours I spent in the forest behind my childhood home, sitting with my back pressed against a tall cedar tree.

I played with its branches.

I brought its resin home so I could continue breathing in its aroma.

It evokes structure, clarity, verticality within me. As if I were that cedar… deeply rooted in the earth.

Its presence settles a solid calm inside me. It supports my inner posture. It gathers my energy back into my body.

In a noisy crowd, it becomes my spine.

Mushroom: Earth, Childhood, and Freedom

The scent of mushroom draws me toward damp earth, moss, fallen leaves, and the gentle shade of the woods of my childhood.

It reconnects me to my love of Nature.

When I walked alone in the forest… I breathed the living soil, the tree trunks, the fresh air.

That solitude carried a particular sweetness.

A quiet sense of freedom.A feeling of being exactly where I belonged.

Even today, this note reactivates that state within me.

My body softens.

My breath deepens.

My mind gathers itself.

Perfume as an Inner Axis

A perfume moves us when it resonates with our inner world.

It becomes a center of gravity.

A living memory.

A point of balance.

In a dense and chaotic environment, a perfume can become a place of restoration.

The perfume I created for myself is an act of alignment.

It accompanies my presence… and reminds me that I am free.

It supports my personal energy.

It reconnects me to that beautiful inner forest that still lives within me.

Emotional Perfumery

Perhaps emotional perfumery begins here.

In a scent’s ability to awaken an ancient sensation that still lives within us.

To gather what feels scattered.

To bring body, breath, and spirit back into the same place.

A perfume can become an invisible refuge, an inner space carried on the skin.

Mine seeks no approval... It seeks me.

It reminds me of the silent child in the forest.

The damp earth beneath her feet.

Her back against the cedar.

The simple freedom of existing without witness.

In the crowd, when everything stirs around me, I breathe… and the forest returns.

And I remember:

I am that stability.

I am that earth.

I am that quiet freedom.

Perhaps the true power of a perfume lies here.

In its ability to return us to our essential truth... To the intact part of us that nothing can alter.

And perhaps the ultimate luxury is simply this:

To return to oneself... To recognize oneself... To stand fully, rooted, within.

Emotions have a scent.
They also have a voice.
I explore this in another way through writing.

Exploring this inner universe.
