How to Choose a Fragrance That Truly Suits You

We're Often Looking for the Wrong Thing

Many people believe they need to find «their fragrance».

As if there were one perfect scent somewhere, made specifically for their personality.

It's an appealing idea.

But reality is a little different.

We're not the same person at work, on holiday, over dinner with friends, or during a walk through the woods.

We change with the moment.

So why should our fragrance always tell the same story?

I prefer to think about fragrance differently.

A fragrance isn't an identity card... It's a presence.

It accompanies a way of being, a moment, sometimes even a mood.

It doesn't define you.

It simply walks beside you for a while.

There's a scene I see quite often.

Someone walks into a perfume boutique with a fairly simple idea in mind:

«I'm looking for a fragrance that feels like me.»

Then the questions begin.

Do you like floral fragrances?

Woody ones?

Fresh?

Gourmand?

Do you prefer something subtle or something with a stronger presence?

Within a few minutes, you're answering questions about scents you may not even know yet.

It's a bit of a paradox.

Because if we already knew exactly what we loved, we probably wouldn't need help choosing.

So how do you find a fragrance that truly suits you?

The answer may be simpler than you think.... But it doesn't begin with fragrance families.

Before Choosing a Scent, Choose a Feeling

If I could ask just one question to someone looking for a fragrance, it probably wouldn't be:

«Which notes do you like?»

I'd be more inclined to ask:

«How would you like to feel when you wear this fragrance?»

The difference is enormous.

Some people are looking for something luminous.

Others want to feel calm.

Some are drawn to a sense of comfort.

Others seek energy, confidence, or freedom.

That intention is often a much better guide than a list of ingredients.

Because a fragrance is never just its notes.

Two fragrances built around rose can create completely different experiences.

One may feel airy.

Another deep.

A third almost quiet.

The material is the same... The experience is not.

Fragrance Families Are Helpful... But They Have Their Limits

Fragrance families are an excellent tool.

They help you find your bearings.

They help you understand broad olfactory styles.

They give you words to describe what you're discovering.

But they never tell the whole story.

Imagine two films classified as «dramas».

They belong to the same category.

Yet they may have absolutely nothing in common.

Perfumery works the same way.

Two woody fragrances can evoke opposite emotions.

One might bring to mind an old library filled with warm afternoon light.

The other, a damp forest after the rain.

The word «woody» is accurate.

But it's far from enough.

That's why I often suggest thinking of fragrance families as a map.

A map helps you choose a direction.

It never replaces the journey.

First Misconception: You Need to Recognize the Notes

It's something I hear quite often.

«I'm not very good at identifying fragrance notes.»

As though that somehow prevented someone from choosing the right fragrance.

In reality, it doesn't.

Recognizing individual notes is a skill that develops over time.

Enjoying a fragrance, on the other hand, is a much more instinctive experience.

When you listen to a piece of music that moves you, you don't need to identify every instrument.

You simply know that it makes you feel something.

Fragrance often works the same way.

You don't need to recognize vetiver, sandalwood, or bergamot to know that a creation makes you feel calm, intrigues you, or makes you want to wear it again.

Notes help describe a fragrance... They aren't essential to knowing whether you want to live with it.

Take the Time to Get to Know a Fragrance

These days, we make many decisions very quickly.

A book.

A film.

A photograph.

A fragrance, however, asks for a little more patience.

The opening is often the most expressive.

It captures your attention.

Then the fragrance changes.

It becomes calmer.

Closer to the skin.

Sometimes even more interesting.

It's a little like a conversation.

Some people are brilliant during the first five minutes.

Then the conversation begins to fade.

Others seem quiet at first but become fascinating as you get to know them.

Fragrances can have that same personality.

That's why I rarely recommend making a decision immediately after the first application.

Whenever possible, wear the fragrance for a few hours.

Let it unfold.

Then ask yourself one very simple question:

«Did I enjoy living with it?»

Not simply smelling it.... Living with it.

Your Skin Is Part of the Fragrance

From time to time, someone tells me:

«I loved it on the blotter.»

Or the opposite.

«It smells completely different on my skin.»

That's perfectly normal.

Your skin isn't a neutral surface.

Its temperature, its level of hydration, its natural chemistry, even the environment you're in... all influence the way a fragrance develops.

That doesn't mean your skin completely transforms the formula.... But it can bring certain facets forward while allowing others to remain more discreet.

That's one more reason not to choose a fragrance based solely on a blotter.

A blotter lets you discover a fragrance... Your skin tells you whether it's truly meant to accompany you.

Second Misconception: The Best Fragrance Is the One That Gets the Most Compliments

It's a common belief.

And I understand why.

Receiving a compliment feels good.

But it's probably not the best way to choose a fragrance.

Why?

Because a compliment mainly reflects someone else's experience... Not yours.

Some fragrances are highly expressive.

They enter the room before you do.

They immediately draw attention.

They often spark a lot of reactions.

Others are far more understated.

They don't try to be noticed straight away.

They reveal themselves in moments of closeness.

They accompany rather than announce themselves.

Neither approach is better than the other.

They simply represent two different ways of experiencing fragrance.

Perhaps the real question is this:

«What role do I want my fragrance to play throughout my day?»

At Atypique, We Always Begin with Intention

When I create a fragrance, I never begin by asking myself which raw materials I'm going to use.

I begin with a different question.

«What experience do I want this fragrance to create?»

That intention then guides every decision.

The materials.

The accords.

The balance.

Sometimes even what I choose to leave out.

Because a material can be beautiful... And still tell the wrong story.

I see much the same thing when someone is searching for a fragrance.

Starting with a list of notes is rarely the most helpful approach.

Starting with the experience you want to live often opens far more possibilities.

It's a less technical approach... But it's often a more meaningful one.

Did You Know?

Sometimes, a fragrance you don't particularly enjoy at first becomes a true favourite a few days later.

Why?

Because your nose learns too.

The more you smell, the more it begins to notice facets that escaped you during the first encounter.

The opposite can happen as well.

A fragrance that feels spectacular during the first few minutes may lose some of its appeal after several days.

That's one of the reasons perfumers take their time before judging a creation.

Your first impression matters... But it doesn't always tell the whole story.

A Perfumer's Perspective

When I let people smell several versions of the same creation, they sometimes ask me:

«Which one is the best?»

To be honest, that's rarely the question I'm asking myself.

What I'm trying to understand is what each one has to say.

One may feel brighter.

Another may feel more calming.

A third may leave a softer, more enveloping impression.

They're not necessarily better or worse than one another... They're simply expressing different intentions.

I believe that's also a beautiful way to choose a fragrance.

Instead of looking for the «best one», look for the one whose story resonates with yours today.

So, How Do You Choose a Fragrance That Truly Suits You?

Perhaps by setting aside, for just a moment, everything you've been told you're supposed to look for.

Don't begin with fragrance families.

Don't chase compliments.

Don't worry if you can't identify every note.

Take your time.

Wear the fragrance.

Let it unfold.

Listen to what it makes you feel.

Then ask yourself one final question:

«Do I feel good wearing it?»

If the answer is yes, you've probably found something far more valuable than a fashionable fragrance...

You've found a fragrance with which it will feel natural to share a part of your story.
