Many people believe a perfume should be noticed the moment they walk into a room.

Personally, I look for exactly the opposite.

I love it when someone discovers a fragrance only after coming closer.

The perfume becomes a reward for proximity... Not an announcement.

The most beautiful scent trails aren't necessarily the strongest.

They're often the most subtle.

They invite.

They never impose.

We don't wear perfume the same way for every occasion.

A day at work often calls for quiet elegance.

A dinner might invite a slightly more enveloping presence.

An intimate moment may ask for a fragrance that only reveals itself from a few inches away.

The amount you apply becomes a form of communication.

Your fragrance speaks before you do.

It's up to you to decide what you want it to say.

And if there's one lesson I'd like you to remember, it's this: In perfumery, more is rarely better.

When You Can No Longer Smell Your Perfume

This happens far more often than people realize.

After a few hours, many assume their fragrance has disappeared... So they apply more.

And sometimes even more.

In reality, the perfume is often still there.

Your brain has simply stopped paying attention to it.

This natural phenomenon is called «olfactory adaptation».

Your nervous system gradually filters out constant smells so it can stay alert to new ones.

That's actually a very good thing.

If your brain didn't work this way, you'd be much slower to notice smoke, gas, or food burning in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, the people around you can often still smell your perfume... even when you're convinced it's gone.

Before reapplying, ask someone you trust whether they can still detect it.

The answer may surprise you.

When You're Discovering a New Perfume

Here's something professional perfumers do almost instinctively.

Start with a small amount.

Wear the fragrance for an entire day.

Notice how it evolves.

How it diffuses.

How far away it can be perceived.

Ask someone you trust whether they can still smell it several hours later.

You'll quickly learn whether your skin naturally calls for a little more.

A perfumer always learns how a fragrance behaves before deciding how much to wear.

Should a Perfume Last Twelve Hours?

Many people look for a perfume that lasts twelve, fifteen, or even twenty-four hours.

But a fragrance isn't meant to tell the same story all day long... It evolves.

The top notes gradually fade.

The heart notes take over.

Finally, the soul of the fragrance reveals itself.

That evolution is precisely what makes perfume beautiful.

Wanting the opening to last forever would be like watching only the first ten minutes of a movie... You'd miss the rest of the story.

Reapplying Perfume Isn't a Failure

Many people believe a great perfume should never need to be reapplied.

I don't share that view.

Adding a few more drops later in the day doesn't mean your perfume is poor quality... It simply means you'd like to experience its opening once again.

True fragrance lovers often carry a travel-size bottle with them.

Not because their perfume doesn't last.

But because they enjoy rediscovering those first beautiful moments.

Much like replaying the opening of a favourite piece of music.

Oil-Based Perfumes Tell a Different Story

Most advice you'll find online is written for alcohol-based perfumes.

Oil-based perfume extracts follow a different philosophy.

They rarely aim for dramatic projection.

Instead, they create an intimate presence.

Just a few drops are often enough.

The fragrance stays close to the skin.

It moves with your body rather than filling the room.

Its goal isn't to be noticed from across the room.

It naturally invites closeness.

It's another way of wearing perfume.

More personal.

More intimate.

So... How Much Should You Apply?

I'd rather answer with another question.

How close do you want someone to be before they discover your fragrance?

If you're looking for an intimate presence, a small amount is often all you need.

If you'd like your fragrance to be noticed a little more, simply add a little at a time.

Then let the perfume do the talking.

Because beyond a certain point, people no longer appreciate the nuances of the composition.

They simply notice... that you're wearing a lot of perfume.

And a great perfume deserves better than that.

Our sense of smell is much better at detecting changes in intensity than a constant level of scent.

In other words, a fragrance that appears gently as you move will almost always feel more elegant than one that constantly saturates the air.

That's why perfumers tend to speak of presence rather than power.

A Perfumer's Perspective

When I create a perfume, I'm not trying to break longevity records.

I'm trying to create a presence.

I'd much rather hear someone say:

"Every time someone came closer, my perfume seemed to come alive again."

Than:

"It filled the whole room for twelve hours."

A great perfume doesn't need to dominate its surroundings.

Its purpose isn't to be smelled by everyone.

Its purpose is to be noticed by the right person... At the right moment.

The best perfume isn't the one that lasts the longest... It's the one you find yourself wanting to experience again.

There's one question I'm asked more often than any other:

"How much perfume should I apply?"

The answer often surprises people.

Because there isn't one universal amount.

It depends on the fragrance, its concentration, the season, the climate, where you're going... but above all, it depends on the presence you want to create.

Perfume isn't about performance... It's about the way you choose to inhabit the space around you.

So perhaps the real question isn't:

"How much should I wear?"

But rather:

"How do I want my fragrance to be discovered?"
