Canadian Artisanal Perfumery

Serge Dumont

An Emotional and Independent Approach

Artisanal perfumery, for me, is first and foremost a story of presence.

It is about taking the time to smell, to listen to the materials, to let them speak to one another. It is about adjusting a formula until it feels right... not only technically, but above all emotionally.

In Canada, this way of creating carries a distinct tone: organic, luminous, and deeply free.

It is inspired by the land itself…

The forests, damp wood, conifers, resin, the cold winter air, the clear light of wide open spaces.

We live in a vast country, and that profoundly shapes the way we compose.

What Is Artisanal Perfumery ?

Artisanal perfumery is perfumery created on a human scale.

The perfumer imagines, formulates, tests, and adjusts everything personally. Each fragrance passes through their hands, their nose, their sensitivity.

Production is often done in small batches, and every creation carries a clear intention and a meaningful story.

Because an artisanal perfume is built like a narrative:

  • A Top note that gently draws you in.

  • A Heart that expresses the main emotion.

  • A Base (the Soul) that lingers, comforts, and accompanies you.

We are not simply seeking a «pleasant scent.»... we are searching for a true presence.

Why Canada Is Developing a Unique Olfactory Identity

Canada naturally inspires a distinct olfactory expression.

The boreal forest, cedar, pine, maple, damp earth in the spring, enveloping winters…

These landscapes live within us.

As a result, we often find:

  • Woody and resinous notes

  • Warm, comforting accords

  • Contrasts between freshness and depth

  • A simplicity crafted with care

In Canada, there is a strong creative freedom — space to explore, to create without pressure, and to allow a personal signature to emerge.

Alcohol-Based Perfume, Extrait, or Oil: A Matter of Experience

The medium changes the way a fragrance lives on the skin.

Alcohol-Based Perfume

It diffuses more easily.

It evolves with movement.

  • A more noticeable sillage

  • A lighter, more airy sensation

  • A more dynamic transformation

Extrait or Oil-Based Perfume

It stays closer to the body.

It becomes more intimate.

  • An enveloping longevity

  • A softer texture

  • A warm presence

The Role of Emotion in Composition

A perfume always begins with an emotion, an energy I seek to bring to life.

A childhood memory.

A walk through the forest.

Autumn light.

A feeling of comfort.

I never begin with a list of materials... I begin with a sensation that wants to exist.

Then technique supports that emotion. Structure helps make it stable, harmonious, and lasting.

A perfume succeeds when it creates a connection, when it awakens something within you.

Independence as a Core Value

Independence allows creation with sincerity.

It gives the freedom to choose materials carefully, to take the time to refine a formula, and to develop a deeply personal signature aligned with one’s inner world.

Each fragrance reflects my personal vision and carries a part of who I am.

I truly believe that this freedom gives rise to creations that are more sensitive and more human.

A Living Perfumery

Canadian artisanal perfumery is deeply connected to its land and to the emotional landscape of its people.

It breathes with nature.

It is written with simplicity and precision.

It seeks balance between light and depth.

Each fragrance becomes a creative imprint on your skin, a gentle presence, and often… a memory in the making.
